2011 Sports Day and Dinner Report
A field of 94 Old Boys and members of the School Community teed off under sunny skies in the 55th Annual Golf Day held at the picturesque Killara Golf Club on Sydney’s North Shore on Thursday 13 October and the prize awaiting the winner to have their name engraved on the Harry Hattersley Shield and embroidered on the Green Jacket depicting supremacy of Old Boys Golf.
At the same time 12 Old Boys under the direction of co-coordinators Gavin Wilcox and Brian Jones competed for the bowls trophy.
It was wonderful to see so many of the young Old Boys competing this year, with no less than 11 Old Boys from the years of 2008 and 2009 participating. Also competing were Graham South (55) and his team mate Ian St Clair (55) who were continuing their marvellous partnership. Both men have been great supporters of the day for many years and for Graham the day brought back many fond memories as he we was competing in his 41st consecutive tournament, a record for anyone who has played on this day. Congratulations Graham on a great achievement!
The Father and Son combination continue to grow with no less than 9 sets competing in this form of the competition.
David (72) and James Hale (06), John (48) and Rob Bennett (80), Murray (48) and Andy Williams (80), Ted (61) and Matthew Harvey (87), David (75) and Chris Hale (08), Peter (76) and Charlie Cozens (08), Charles (past parent) and Harry Benson (08), Scott (current parent) with Henry (06) and Ollie Hill (09), and Bill (77) and Harry Pulver (09).
A number of Masters also competed on the day, including the Sportsmaster Mark Ticehurst, Andy Cavill (71), Phil Cameron (77), John Meakins and Andrew Bohlsen (83). The Headmaster Dr Tim Wright took time out from his busy schedule to call in on the bowls. The President of the Old Boys Union Tony Bulmer (80) fresh from a round of golf at Tamworth in August also had an enjoyable day.
The Greens were as quick as lightning making putting hard for even the best of golfers, but many made up on the fairways which were tailor made for the long hitters. The winner of the prestigious Harry Hattersley Shield and Green Jacket for 2011 was Matt Bushell (2008) with a score of 41. Matt won on a count back from Roy Morgan (69) who unfortunately had a higher handicap. Andrew Dowe (55) and Rowan Barker (53) were the winners of the David B Walker Trophy Pairs Event with a score of 44 with the unlucky Roy Morgan and Al Hardy (69) runners up with the same score.
The Alumni Trophy was won by the 2008 year of Matt Bushell, Jack Playfair and Angus Watson who returned from a successful tournament in 2010, their combined score being 107; while the Father and Son Trophy was won by the Cameron pairing of David (72) and James (2006). Phil Emery (81) won the Longest Drive on the 18th, while the nearest to the pins were won by David Hale (72) on the 2nd and Andrew Dowe (55) on the 11th.
Guest for the day former Australian Test Cricketer Doug Walters OBE had an enjoyable day coming in with a total of 37 points, four off the pace. Doug played alongside Jeff McDougall (64) and the brother pairing of Chris (63) and Peter (59) Stevens. Defending Champion Keith Wallis (79) had another great day just behind the main field with a score of 34. Another guest Luke Elvy (93), the voice and face of Australian Golf on the Network Ten, also had a good day coming in with a score of 31.
Meanwhile over at the Bowling Green, Trevor Holman (62), David Cathels (49) and Gavin Wilcox (48) were winning the bias against their opponents, the combination winning from Pat Mills (45), Ted Pratten (47) and John Eldershaw (49) with John having been in the winning combination in 2010.
The evening was also a great success with Luke Elvy as MC. Luke made everyone feel welcome with his opening address and his introduction to the cricketing legend Doug Walters was fantastic. Doug told a number of great stories of his days of touring with the Australian Cricket team, including his rooming with Jim Higgs in England and Jim having gone through the entire tour without scoring a run! Other features were his century in a session against the West Indies in Perth in which he brought up his ton with a six off the last ball of the day as well as the formation of World Series Cricket under Kerry Packer.
Our guest entertained a number of us until shortly before midnight with some amazing card tricks, each containing a story line. Doug thoroughly enjoyed his day and evening and the OBU is extremely grateful for his presence.
The staff at Killara was wonderful in looking after us as always.
The OBU through its Golf Committee, consisting of Peter Cozens (76) Chairman, Brian Paterson (69), Rick Clive (68), and Nick Foord (80) would like to thank all those who attended. The Committee was ably assisted by Tanya Hill and Meagan Evans from the OBU and Foundation Office, and we can honestly say that without their assistance the day would not have been the success it was. Thank you Tanya and Meagan. The Golf Committee would also like to thank current parent and Killara Golf Club Member, Roz Moore for her contribution on the day in keeping the participants refreshed up with food and beverages. Well done Roz!
We look forward to next year’s event once again at Killara scheduled for Thursday 11 October 2012. Put the date down in your diaries now.
