2011 Melbourne Reunion

HOST:   Bill Reynolds  (69) (Australia Club)

CONVENED BY:   Steve Pilcher (63) (Victorian Convener)

Twenty two Old Boys attended the 2011 Annual Old Boys' Dinner at Melbourne’s Australia Club on Wednesday 15 June 2011.

Members were treated to pre-dinner drinks in the Dining Room foyer before moving in for dinner at 7.30pm.

To commence the evening Steve Pilcher welcomed all before saying Grace and then calling on the Honourable Michael Mackellar (55) to Toast the School.   As in recent years Steve called on each to announce themselves and to mention which House they were in at School.  This year belonged to both Robson and School.

Those in attendance were treated to an engaging presentation by Guest Speaker Philip Moors (64), Director & Chief Executive Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.    Phillip took us through a journey which led to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, winning a Gold Medal at the world renowned Chelsea Flower Show held in England in March.   The award winning garden was visited by Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal Family including Princess Beatrice.

Rick Clive (68) representing both the OBU and the School gave an address on the recent success of the School both at a scholastic level and on the sporting field as well as updating all on recent OBU activities and the lives of notable Old Boys who had been in the news of late.   He also gave an update on the state of play regarding the development of the Graythwaite Estate.

It was great to see once again Percy Newell (37), John Marshall (38) and Ken Mills (44) who represented the elder statesmen, and David Mason-Jones (92) and Bruce Teichert (91) who represented the younger generation.   James Dorney (93) who ably assisted Steve Pilcher in recent months was unfortunately a late apology due to interstate work commitments.

It was also great to see former OBU Committeeman and School Council representative Phillip Bower (73) in attendance.  Phillip who calls Melbourne home for the business days of the week before venturing home to Sydney for weekends attended his first Melbourne dinner.

Members during the evening took time out to reflect on the recent passing of Benn Selby (32) who had been a regular attendee at the Melbourne dinner for decades.

Next year’s gathering will more than likely be once again held in June with the Headmaster, Dr Tim Wright, the invited guest.   It is hoped that the evening will be held on a Thursday evening centred around a Super 15 Rugby match featuring the ‘Melbourne Rebels’ the next night.
