The OBU and Our Vision
I am often asked what the OBU does and what activities are coming up this year, so this report will focus on providing some insights to these questions.
Firstly, there is the Vision and Objectives for the OBU as laid out in our Constitution.
Vision ...
Providing on-going enrichment, fellowship and support to current students of the school and Members throughout their lives.
Objects ...
The objects of the OBU in achieving this vision shall be to:
-
Provide fellowship for Members;
-
Develop a philosophy for the whole-of-life support for Members;
-
Support the School's aims and objectives;
-
Provide guidance and leadership to Members;
-
Communicate and interact with Members and the School community; and
-
Carry forward the School's heritage.
The OBU directly organises a range of events each year, and supports many activities within the School calendar.
Events organised by the OBU include:
-
Year Reunions... alumni years that are 10, 20, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 years since leaving.
-
Regional Reunions... such as Tamworth, Riverina, Far West, Melbourne, Brisbane, London & Singapore.
-
Annual Sports Day... golf, bowls and tennis sports day, open to all Old Boys and past and present as well as parents and friends of the School.
-
Quadrangular Cricket... Old Boys, Parents, Teachers and Students which is played at Northbridge over 3 Friday afternoons in February.
-
OBU Northbridge Day... a return to Northbridge Day for Old Boys at the last home game of the Rugby/Soccer season.
-
Careers Night... advice and guidance is provided by a range of industry leaders to Years 10,11 & 12 students.
Whole of Life...
The OBU also provides ongoing support in the areas of career, life decisions and pastoral care through its Whole of Life programme. Through this programme the OBU can provide contacts to members or associates with relevant career experience to answer questions and help where desired. Special emphasis is also given to the provision of support in life decisions and pastoral care and this is provided by our (new in 2005) School Community Chaplain Rev. Nick Foord.
Other activities...
The OBU also:
-
Holds key Chapel Service's throughout the year including the Open Chapel Service and Remembrance Day Service.
-
Maintains its OBU website which provides an avenue for communication and interaction on all activities and events for the OBU.
-
Supports School Archives to ensure the School's history is captured and preserved.
-
Assists the Shore Foundation in its events including the upcoming All Sports Lunch, Rowing Challenge and regional events.
In supporting the Schools aims and objectives, the OBU has made financial contributions to Archives and is supporting the publication of "Facing the Foe" covering The History of Service of Shore Boys 1889 - 1939.
OBU Scholarships ...
The OBU also provides the Old Boys Scholarship, which is awarded to recognise an applicant's contribution to the Life of the School. It acknowledges a positive attitude to scholastic endeavours; constructive relationships with peers and staff; involvement in leadership activities; and eager participation in extra curricular activities and in games. Applicants need not excel in any or all of the above. The scholarship seeks to acknowledge the applicant's support of the School and its aims, and his effort, contribution and involvement, having regard to the applicant's ability and potential.
Congratulations to this years two recipients, Anders Sideris and Jack Marples.
